It is grown in India, China and some parts of USA. India is the largest producer of Mentha Arvensis. Both mentha arvensis and Menthol are widely used in flavor and pharmaceutical industry.
Mentha Piperita / Peppermint oil: is obtained from steam distillation of Mentha Piperita leaves. It is also called as Black Peppermint oil because of its dark color leaves. Its major components are Menthofuran and L-Menthol. L-Menthol content is lower as compared to Mentha Arvensis. Origin of Peppermint oil is USA and India.
Mentha Spicata / Spearmint oil: obtained from steam distillation of Mentha Spicata leaves. Its major component is L-Carvone which gives spearmint its distinctive smell. Spearmint oil also contains significant amounts of limonene, dihydrocarvone and 1,8-cineol. Unlike peppermint oil, the oil of spearmint contains minimal amounts of menthol. Countries in which it is majorly grown are China, USA and India.
